About Chloe Neath

Chloe Neath is an artist that works in charcoal and gold leaf to create large, realistic portraits.

"Beauty and life-experience intrigue me equally. I draw using charcoal to create large realistic portraits, occasionally adding gold leaf or coloured pastel. I spent many hours reworking details and depth, to achieve realism, challenging myself to develop my charcoal drawing techniques. I’m always on the lookout for interesting faces, and often photograph and draw local people. The aim of my artworks is to be accurate but also to capture and evoke the life and experience of the person in the portrait.”    Chloe Neath

Chloe recently collaborated with the talented performer Mama Alto on a project that combined a charcoal drawing with time-lapse film. The drawing and film were exhibited in the inaugural Waller Art Prize and Chloe was awarded Second Prize for her entry.

"Mama Alto is a jazz singer, cabaret artiste, gender-transcendent diva and community activist. She is a trans femme person of colour who works with the radical potential of storytelling"  Adolfo Aranjuez- Liminal Magazine.

In March 2018 Chloe Neath's studio was open to visitors as part of 'Newstead Open Studios Art Trail'. This was a unique opportunity to see her original charcoal drawings in the space where they are meticulously created.

In June 2017 Chloe completed her tour with The Laudanum Project presenting 'The Baby Farmer', a project that consisted of an illustrated book, an exhibition, and a play. Chloe created 30 intricate charcoal drawings to capture the impact and detail of the story.

"The illustrations that Neath has produced for the book ... are strikingly original and incongruently beautiful."

Chloe Neath frequently participates in group exhibitions and has also held two highly successful solo exhibitions. 'Portraits' in 2014 and 'Charcoal Portraits' at The Capital Theatre in 2015 that showcased a series of detailed portraits of women and men she discovered in Bendigo and Castlemaine.
